So as promised, reporting back on my second opinion appointment. What a roller coaster ride this has been! Visited with a major cancer centre in the city with a very reputable doctor who gave us a much different diagnosis. T2 instead of T3; recommended preserving the bladder rather than surgery to remove bladder and prostate; and according to him there has been no spread but some kind of infection in the pelvic area. Wants to proceed with a cystoscopy before radiation and this will happen next week.

So in the past 48hrs we've gone from the worse possible news to potentially really positive news. My main concern at this point is getting a firm diagnosis. Regardless, one thing I have learned through all this is getting someone to a major cancer centre immediately. Team of doctors onsite, multiple appointments, and just a good feeling all around.

Will write back as I'm sure I'll have more news next week.

Peace and love,
Mark R

Mark,

I know its hard not to be objective, I would hold off all beliefs in his diagnosis until he gets this second opinion. You still have a chance to have much time with dad. There is a possibility the next opinion is enlightening and may be just what the doctor ordered. Have faith, stay positive, put hope into this next step. The fact the previous doctor said she hoped she was wrong indicates that possibly she is. I am bothered by the fact that they told you he was metastsized then saying they are 90 per cent sure, either he is or he isn't..I would go from here, get to the specialist, example, my husband Gene, had his first turb, the urinologist said he had to have his bladder out and chemo and radiation.
Next step the Cleveland Clinic, their diagnosis, bladder removal, no chemo and no radiation. And they were right, I am trying to make your load a little lighter by seeing that you need to wait, get that 2nd opinion, it may change many things. I am sure you are panicking, we all did, but you are doing the right thing, and you are a wonderful son. Have Hope!!!!! Ginger

Mark,

You are doing a great job...give yourself time to grieve...this is a hard thing to grasp...You seem like you are a very loving son, be sure that you lean on whoever gives you strength in your personal life...IE your spouse/ partner and friends...don't be afraid to show you emotional side...it is cleansing and gives you the energy you need to get through the tough times...doing research and setting up appointments helps keep you busy too.

Most importantly remember that your father may have cancer...but he is still here...don't forget to have good times...don't make everyday about the cancer...make memories...have fun...laugh & cry together...look through photo albums...ask about your genealogy...talk about his childhood & life...ask advice about fatherhood, being a good spouse...if he loves something such as gardening, or fishing...do it together...You have a long road ahead...but it is still a road...share the journey with him...wherever it takes you...

With prayers and good wishes,
Karen
