I haven't been around for a while dealing with new news...
My bonus mom (age 48, non smoker, non exposed) was diagnosed stage IV metastatic bladder cancer in June 08. She then contracted Sepsis and MRSA from the hospital and through her dialysis.
After five weeks in the hospital, she came home for a total of two weeks. She started having issues with her right eye and was admitted last friday (when she was supposed to start another round of chemo).
The MRI was clear.
The MRI w/ contrast (MRA) was clear.
On a hunch, due to his only recent experience with his mother in law, the neurologist asked for a lumbar puncture.
She was diagnosed with Carcinoma Meningitis.
Scientifically speaking, they have told us the chemo through a brain shunt would add a few weeks of life, maybe letting her make it to six months in a "best case scenario" ~ I was asked if we wanted to just take her home.
We are, of course, attempting to transfer her to the hands of a neurosurgeon and explore other options and discuss this more thoroughly.
Her WBC is over 47000 right now, she has sepsis again and her creatinine is at 2.4 ~ there is substantial concern she would even be able to handle the chemo and the surgery she'd need.
I'm just so scared. I'm having to call our friends (we all just moved from NC to WV and DC) and I just feel like I'm a character in a nightmare movie sequence...or a flash back or something.
