Holding the BCG

3 months 2 weeks ago #58156 by Atlanta51
I guess I have been fortunate, but I’ve haven’t had any issues on holding the BCG as prescribed. I do not have liquids past 10 PM the day before (I do “swish” bottle water the next day, though) and I eat light the night before (soup). Somewhere I read that having an empty bowel reduces pressure on the bladder.

Good luck with your future treatments.

Do you stay in one position, or roll, or walk?
I did the rotate 1/4 turn each 15 minutes, and can tell you that when it came to laying on my stomach, that really added pressure and I felt like I had to go right away. Near the end of my 6 Induction, I would cut my stomach 15 minutes short, so I could then last the 2 hours easily.

For me, I could stop drinking 2-3 hours before the treatment, and survive 2 hours each time.

The RN does drain your bladder with the catheter prior to inserting BCG? The RN stated to me that this is done because the catheter can clear out more urine from the bladder than our body can.

TURBT Jan 2019; Diag: CIS
Induction BCG (Mar 19) /Maint BCG (Aug 19)
TURBT Nov 2019; Diag: CIS
Repeat Induction BCG starts Dec 2019

Dear Sarah and Alan,

Thanks for the reply, and good to know my BCG treatments are not any different from anyone else's experience.

Warm regards, Nelson

Just to echo Alan.....Toward the end if I was able to hold it for an hour I was lucky!! My doc told me just to do the best I could.

2 hours is a suggestion. Do what you can. My first 6 I was able to hold for two hours. 7,8,9 were less and the last 2 which was 11 and 12 for me it was only 30 minutes.

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.
