I believe most docs will wash after the TURB with gemcitabine or other agents to kill any "reseeded" cells and to help kill anything left. It was done on my TURB. I believe you have some confusion on biopsy and TURB. The TURB is the actual scraping/burning for a biopsy sample, then samples sent to the pathology to be graded and examined. So, washing the bladder is proper and biopsy is what is studied afterward. Not sure I have explained this well....my control of our language is sometimes suspect (laughing at myself).

The waiting for the report is the hardest part. I have learned to take one day at a time. That is all we can control anyway. The good news is you are on the path to resolution and answers. Plus, it appears your URO is on top of things.

Thanks Alan, Your reply makes perfect sense. I've never smoked and my general health is very good with a pretty high physical fitness level. The tumor three years ago was a TA with high grade cells. I only ask this because I recently had a negative cytology but a suspicious cysto three years after my original diagnosis. The plan is to scape the suspicious area, which apparently is very near the original tumor site and biopsy it. I am puzzled about one thing though: My urologist says he's going to install gemcitabine after the area is scraped BEFORE the biopsy. I just don't understand why the gemcitabine will be installed now instead of after the first TURBT, and especially, why now before the specimen is even biopsied. You're spot on in your answer dealing with trust in the medical team, and I appreciate it that you reminded me of this.

BigRIJoe,

None of us are doctors and what you are asking is the million dollar question with almost no info. Most of us are not anywhere near qualified to answer what could be done differently and I have learned to trust whatever medical team (after research) is picked. I presume your tumor was TA stage, was it high grade or low grade? What did the doctor say? What other options did they offer? Was this a recurrence or what happened 3 years ago? How is your general health? Did you smoke?

Anyway, welcome as we are all here to try and be advocates or suggesters to anyone that has this disease.

I was diagnosed with a TA about three years ago. I had the growth removed and under went the typical BCG treatment. Could anything been done differently?
