Side effects of BCG treatment

Usually the side effects are relatively minor, and they tend to increase as the treatments go on, indicating that the immune system is being stimulated as intended. The most common side effect is fatigue for a day or so after treatment. Increased urinary frequency and a burning feeling, blood clots in the urine are also possible. If the side effects become too troublesome the dose can be significantly reduced and still be effective.

We are fortunate to have this treatment available. It is so much better than the systematic chemotherapy that many types of cancer require. I went through the initial six weeks of installations and had maintenance treatments for two years. I was uncomfortable the afternoon of the treatments, but was totally able to function after that.
Towards the end the burning got pretty uncomfortable so the dosage was reduced to 1/3 the initial dose and I was able to complete the series. Have now been cancer-free for almost 9 years!

Occasionally patients are sensitive to BCG and do need to discontinue.

I would like those who have had BCG treatment to let me know if they have had any side effects from this treatment.
