Three Month Cystoscopy

I have had a clean biopsy after 6 rounds of BCG, and a clean cystoscopy 3 months later. My initial diagnosis was non invasive CIS . I have another 3 month check on October 5th, and I hope it is clean again. I am hoping to go to Florida for the winter at the Villages in January a large retirement community, and I have been in contact with a urology group there who are equipped to treat bladder cancer. I was interested to see if there were anyone in the forum who has switched Urologists.

Sara Anne,

Your reply that odds are I would be clean, can this be calculated based on an initial clean biopsy after BCG, and not visible symptoms since. CIS is reported to be responsive to BCG, and the initial clean biopsy seemed to indicate that. Also is a cystoscopy just 3 months later a fair timeline to get a measurement of result?

I'm in the same boat. I am on the three month cycle (in fact I have to call my doctor as I am a week late - what's up doc?!?) After my cysto clears me I feel free as a bird for several months but as the next cysto draws near I start to wonder what I'll do if "it" returns.

08/16/16 - TURBT - 1 tumor, T1HG, 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.8 cm, non-invasive papillary.
BCG treatments (15 doses total - last March, 2018). As of latest cysto, As of May 4, 2023 - cancer free!

Mistersac,

The overwhelming majority of us have a good prognosis on this. As we often say treatable and beatable. I remind myself often that others have way worse cancers. Most involve the torture of chemo. Recently, I had a triple bypass and am into rehab. I am probably better off than 95%. I see rehabbers carrying oxygen bottles as they work out and other hobbling. There is always someone worse.

One day at a time! Which is what you are doing and I love your attitude!

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

Sara Anne,

You are correct, and I do try to live every day. I work out regularly, play a lot of golf, and really feel great. That is why it is so mind blowing that I have this condition, and there is no predictor as to what my cystoscopy will show. I have my faith, and I know it is in God's hands, maybe because of your thoughtfulness, and experience with CIS I am looking to you for a positive prognosis. I appreciate fully what you do, and I will try and continue to live every day.

You are asking a lot of questions that really have no concrete answers. No one can predict exactly what might happen in a particular instance. I have just given you what answers I can. BCG is the best current therapy for non-invasive CIS. Can it still come back? Of course. A 3-month cystoscopy tells you that three months out you are cancer-free. That is certainly better than if you were NOT clear. And with each succeeding clear exam the odds get better.

I know that it is really hard not to worry when an exam is coming up, but you need to concentrate on what you have, not a lot of what-ifs that have no clear answer. Could you get hit by a car tomorrow? Sure. Do you worry over-much about this happening? No. It is the same with bladder cancer. Yes, awful things can happen. The odds are against it, so we go on enjoying the lives we have.
