Mike,

Thank you, and I will definitely ask my urologist every question that pops into my mind. I am very pro-active with my healthcare, and I suspect most people here are as well. I have become more so with the "C" word added to my list of anomalies.

Over the years I have heard many horror stories regarding VA hospitals and the care they administer. While I believe that some may have been true, I am very pleased with the care I get. It may, and I suspect it does, vary from Region to Region, but all in all it has much improved facilities and medical personnel.

I very much appreciate your recognition of my service!

Regards, Griz

Griz,

Good luck on the knee surgery!

With regard to BCG, your urologist should answer that question for you.

One thing to note about BCG is that it especially effective in treating CIS (which is very aggressive).

Given that you were low grade, your uro may not have felt that BCG would be effective. Watchful waiting is often the plan for low grade depending on some other factors. I encourage you to get the question in to your doc.

Thank you for your service!

Mike

Ps: my urologist is one of the top doctors at University of Colorado teaching hospital and he also has patients through the nearby VA hospital. So some top docs are available thru VA. Your doc may very well be top notch as well. Let us know what yours says and we may be able to give you some more information.

Catherine,
Thank you for the response. Will try to remember to ask on Monday when I have a resection.
I`ll give it all I have to work myself into shape after the knee revision. I plan to be able enough to put my garden in this spring.

Hello Griz... I'm glad the forum has been a help to you. You are right... there is a lot of great information here from people who have been there. Since my cancer was not the type treated with BCG I don't have any direct knowledge of that experience except what has been posted here by others who know a lot about BCG. At any rate, I would certainly ask your doctor next time to get his/VA perspective on it.

I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming knee surgery. Hope all goes well and you're back up and around in no time!

Best wishes... Catherine

Hello folks. I perused your forum three years ago, or so back when I was first dx, and have stopped by from time to time to grab some of the valuable information posted here.
My cancer is of the low grade non-invasive group and I have had a total of four TURs, the most recent from a tumor that had moved to the lower end of the ureter. Following the second TUR I was treated with mitomycin and was clear for just about a year when it reoccurred. My last cysto showed an area that appeared sort of 'angry' instead of a tumor, and a biopsy proved to be positive. Will have yet another TUR on Monday, 1/14.
My urologist has never even mentioned BCG and I`m wondering why? I`m a disabled veteran, so my healthcare is at VA, so I have theorized that mabe BCG is more expensive than mitomycin? I guess my main question is, has my treatment (cysto-TUR, cysto-TUR, cysto-TUR) been standard operating procedure thus far?
At this juncture, nothing more can be done in my bladder for six months because I am to have a total knee revision surgery 1/21, and the threat of infection is very high. An infection in the joint is the LAST thing I need!
Thanks in advance for any tips..

Regards, Griz
