BCG and septic systems

I've been doing some searching. The idea is to not leave live tuberculin vaccine around for others to get it. Good idea to use it to wipe the toilet seat and under it if anything splashes. You can use a bit less in the toilet. DON'T leave BCG urine in the toilet without bleaching. Your septic should be fine. People talk about adding good bacteria to the septic. Guess what? Human poop has all the bacteria you need. I guess everyone could poop more and you could invite the neighbors over to add some more but bleach is often in septic systems from washing mashines anyway.

Pour a half cup instead of a cup if you want. It's only for the day of BCG treatment, then there is a week rest for the system.

No, I'm not going to gaurantee your septic system but I found that info other places where people were asking about bleach and specifically about BCG with bleach.

Whatever you do, DON'T leave live BCG in your toilet to 'save up' for bleaching. I suppose you could bleach it, not flush, go again, little more bleach, etc. and then flush but be careful not to have it splash up on you if you have bleach (OR just BCG) in the toilet. The BCG or bleach can get on your skin and that's not good either.

We still have the old outhouse that we used in the camp for years and years when I was a kid. My brothers and their families still use it. I thought about using that as well! Or for those very cold winter nights they have a bucket in the furnace room, which has a box and toilet seat built around it so the ladies don't have to bare their bottoms in the outhouse in zero degree weather! I've thought about using that as well.

Linda, that was a nice neighbor.

The more I think about this septic business, the more I wonder how important the bleach is. If you were peeing the stuff into a municipal sewer system, of course you'd want to kill the bacteria before flushing it. With the septic, it's just going to leach into our backyard. If it kills some russian thistle tumbleweeds, I'm all for it! We are nowhere close to anyone's water supply, so any bacteria that might still be alive, assuming it lives through the freezing temps this winter, isn't going to end up coming out of someone's tap.

I'm thinking about two options:

1. Pee out behind the shed in the backyard. (Seriously, an anesthesiologist friend recommended this.)

2. Pee in the same toilet without flushing until the recommended time is over, then pour the 2 cups of bleach in one time only and flush.

Option three would be to skip the BCG altogether, but I don't think that's viable.

I have the same problem - a septic system. My husband talked to our septic guy and he was adamant that it wouldn't be good to dump those amounts of bleach consistently for six weeks. So I have been going to a friend's house with my bottle of bleach! That is working out well so far.

I do wonder about if you need to bother with the bleach when you have a septic system. How long could the bacteria live? I am a long, long way from any other septic systems. I probably would have said the heck with it but my husband is a real rule follower so he was opposed to that idea. It would probably take me more than two hours to drive home from the doctor's office anyhow!

It never ceases to amaze me how far this site can go in answering questions.

We are usually talking about Plumbing on this site; the human kind. Then! BOOM! We are talking about "plumbing" the flushing kind!

Amazing
