Had my cytoscopy this afternoon. Doc knew I was nervous and we discussed the issues with detection of CIS with cytoscopy. He said that with his experience and the addition of urine cell cytology he rates his confidence level at bette than 99%. Then he said I was CLEAR!! Will have the next cystoscopy in three months and the next BCG six months from the last BCG!!
I feel much relief,, both from the test results and from our discussion.

I was dxd with cis nearly two years ago. At first it was get a regular cysto in the office which resulted in hmmmm... looks like some suspicious areas there - better do an OR biopsy. This year it's just been go straight to the OR and get cysto with multiple random biopsy samples. Saves me a trip and I feel a little more confident.....but not too. Even 8 or 10 samples may miss it. And don't believe any uro who says there was none present. The best they can say is they didn't see any - which doesn't mean it isn't there. That is why it's such a shame that in this day and age we are denied the diagnostic improvements that Hexvix could bring us. I understand it's approved for use in all 27 European Union countries. Good grief, it's not even a treatment - it's just an identification tool - it could save money and lives but the FDA hasn't given it a priority. I'm told the FDA has 3000 job vacancies they can't obtain funding to fill. Maybe the new administration will bring some relief.
Meanwhile, I don't think bladder cancer research carries much weight in the world of research either. Listen to Dr.O'Donnell's latest interview on this site. He says it's way down on the money chain and dropping year after year. He says it's like who remembers who came in worse than third in any Olympic event. I'm doing what I can - if the finance geniuses in Washington and Wall Street don't wipe out all my assets by the time I check out, I'm putting the University of Iowa Foundation - bladder cancer research, in my will for a nice pop. best, brewster

The only cystoscopy I ever had was when the uro was looking for interstitial cystitis and instead found BC. He took some tissue samples for biopsy but the dx of Ta ended up being incorrect. After that I only had TUR's so they could get big enough samples for the pathologist. I had CIS and several T1G3 tumors. I have read so often of people having cystoscopes and wondered why I had TUR's instead.

Thanks for the references, Cynthia. Every time I read them I think of something new. It was just that it had never hit me that it might not be visible with cystoscopy. I was just assuming that when the doc said it "looks good" that might not mean what I thought it did.

Cynthia,
Thank you, I don't feel as scared since I read your thoughts. I have had CIS dx 10/07 since BCG + 2 Maintenance and always urine cytology (two-one sent out the other 30 min?) Other than the Blue Light (which my Uro doesn't do) I think everything is being done to detect CIS? So far, clear - next cysto is 11/17 and now I get very nervous - since it will be 6 months since last BCG:(

Don't panic remember yours was found and is being treated what would be really scary would be running around with CIS growing away and no one knowing it.

Pat is right Hexvix...blue light for cystoscopy holds a great deal of hope for detecting CIS and early TCC for that matter. The technology belongs to GE medical in the US and is in the process of going through US government acceptance as we speak.

What follows are two articles on CIS that might help you more fully understand CIS; here is a quote from the first article.
