My Uro uses the voided sample for the FISH. I've never heard of doing the cysto other than with a bladder wash. But then I am learning new things about techniques and treatments every time I surf this site. My Uro also gives me a choice of with or without numbing gel. Lately it has been almost intolerable with out the numbing gel.

Does your uro do a bladder wash for FISH or does he use the voided sample? Don't know if there is a difference in sensitivity, but my uro always does a bladder wash at the time of the cysto - which means no numbing gel :(

Maybe worth checking into.

Thanks to all on your replies and links. I knew if I asked the question that I would get some information. However, I want reassurance that my interpretation is correct. Squamous Cells in in the urine is an indicator of developing carcinoma. But if I read this correctly, only in a few cases does the indicator also find later tumors. In addition, the majority cases show an irritation in males and not a preclusion of tumors. Am I correct?

Thanks again,

Chuck

Further searches found the following it seems that squamous cells can be atributed to inflammation due to infection, therapy or other factors.

thats interesting Cynthia...notice they think the squamous cells are exfoliated from the cervix in the female...and irritation or infection in the male....???
Since only 2% of all bladder cancers are of squamous cell orientation its kind of makes me question why not the presence of the cells in females to also be representative of irritation (from BCG or Mytomycin?) or repeat UTI's. Their suggestion is that the women should also get cervical scrapings i guess?

I did a search and found several abstracts on the subject. Here are ecerpts from Christopher L. Owens, Department of Pathology, of Johns Hopkins Hospital, published in InterSiecne in 2005.
