Hey Nancy...having gone into the twilight zone i found this......

"Photodynamic treatment is a novel mode of treatment that uses special chemicals and light to kill the cancerous cells when the bladder cancer is in its early stages. First, a drug is introduced into the bladder that makes the cancer cells more susceptible to light. A special light is then shone on the bladder in an attempt to destroy the cancerous cells."

aha...here is one study in Germany........

And this from the NCI which explains a bit more.......

I did mention the "blue light" diagnostic tool that I read about on the forum, however he seemed convinced about the study he was explaining. Hope he is right!

Hi Nancy.....maybe he was referring to the Hexvix blue light which is a diagnostic tool that they are using in Europe and are testing at various centers in the USA...it apparently is very useful in seeing sneakier cancers of the bladder like CIS....but i shall explore the Sci-Fi version!!! :D Pat

Patricia,
Thank you so much for the info on the new study. Although, so far BCG seems to be working, it is comforting to know new treatments are still being tested!
My Uro mentioned, in conversation, that Europe is studying a treatment with a "light"? He said it looked very promising, as they have been doing studies the past few years. Have you heard of this? Something like - they give you a wash/or IV that "colors" the cancer cells and the light "kills" all of them! It sounds too good to be true, so maybe I misunderstood him. Perhaps, I am thinking of a SciFi movie :)

Sol,

I'm confused. I was under the impression that you weren't too happy with your Doctor (who doesn't "miss a beat") because he wouldn't offer your the BCG with Interferon. In such a case, a second opinion is the very best advice that I have to offer.

Otherwise, I would like to throw this out, in case it might help, it is the National Cancer Institute Home Page for Clinical Trials. This page helps you find a current Clinical Trial and it also gives the results of Clinical Trials...
