Hi kyrellia,

You have every right to see your medical records. They'll probably make you jump through the hoops though. I don't think it's expected of patients in this country to want to see their records. It's probably one of the last taboos within the medical profession here. You are entitled to see them though. Maybe your consultant hasn't been in touch with your GP because you were a private patient. If your concerned about your diagnoses. You can ask for a second opinion. It's perfectly acceptable.

I was shown my pathology report by one of the hospital nurses. I was being checked out prior to my first scope after receiveing my TURBT. Like yours it was done under a general anathestic. This is incase of a recurrance. It can be dealt with there and then-fortunately mine was clear. So, I asked to see my records. This was strictly on the QT. I had already been told I was G1pTa, but I wanted to see it with my own eyes. The letters I got were quite informative, but they were necessarily drafted in laymen's terms. Scientific jargon doesn't scare me. Like you. It was important that I see the raw data.

Where in Scotland are you? I live in Edinburgh. Just 10 minutes from the Western General. I have to say. As you would expect. They know their stuff there. I was happy with the treatment. The staff were very good-as was the food. All the same. I was glad that I was only in one night.

If you're close to a Maggie's Centre, it might be worth paying it a visit. They're very supportive. They provide information on patient's rights, nutrition and excercise, financial information, etc. All maggie's Centres have extensive libraries. You are allowed to borrow the books if you wish. They can help with councilling and a whole host of things. You even get free tea and biscuits. And you can chat to other visitors. I've only felt the need to go twice, but I'm glad I did. It was a rewarding experience. I met some very inspiring and interesting people.

Here's a link: www.maggiescentres.org/maggies/maggiescentres/home/home.html

Give me a PM if you fancy a blether.

All the best.

Brian

There isn't just the one copy of the report that you have to track down by figuring out who has it. Contact the pathology department of the hospital where the procedure was done and ask for a copy.

Hi,

Just wondering why you would have to "press" for the pathology report...It is prudent for you to put in your medical file and keep a copy. God bless, Holly
