Cystos as predictors of recurrence

Okay, I see where you are going with this. You are talking about a trend of outcomes. Well, all I know is that after I hit my 2 year mark this January, if all goes well, then my appointments are set back to every 6 months instead of every 3 months. I don't think that I would say that a clean cysto trend would be considered "predictive" but with each successively clear cysto the bladder cancer outcome becomes more hopeful.

I know there are scientific tables for risks of progression, etc. Here is one that was posted by a Forum Member (Christopher). I could not get this calculator to download, so good luck with it....

Hi Rosie,
sorry for the vague question but I was looking for an optimistic view of the importance of non recurrence trends! Are there key cysto results of non recurrence that are used to predict future non recurrence? Since I last wrote I have been for the cysto and the doctor has found "stones" encrusted upon the former site of the cancer. He talked about operating on my prostrate as he felt that subnormal voiding was probably the reason for the stones and also pointed out that I would not have had the problem with retention if I was voiding ok. However, I explained that this is not the case as I thought I was going to be incontinent at one point and since the retention I have normalised vis voiding. He has now said that he will opt for another cysto in six weeks to see if the "stones" have fell off the wall of the bladder. By the way he also reassured me there was no evidence of a cancer returning! Has anyone out there had a similar experience and how was that resolved?

I'm a little confused about your question. A cysto is a diagnostic tool to evaluate if a recurrance has taken place. I don't see how it could PREDICT because it seems like the Dr. is just LOOKING :o into the bladder with a scope. So, unless he is also doing a biopsy (which in my experience is unlikely in the absence of anesthesia), then, he is just simply LOOKING for a recurrance and he is not predicting anything.

I don't want to confuse you but I recently had a negative urine cytology but the cystoscopy performed the same day showed the presence of several papillary tumors and a possible CIS (or something else). I think the cytology is not reliable in detection of low grade cancer. Good luck and keep us posted.

It is part of the process, They also check your urine for Abnormal cells. I am dealing with this myself.I had a clear negative turb, but apositive on urinaloy. they are trying to find the soarse of bad cells. Good luck to you let us know how you do. Don

I go back to hospital tomorrow for my first cysto since my turbt (g1pta).
I am a little apprehensive as you would expect. More about the procedure than the outcome I guess. Crazy value system I know. My question is this; are cysto outcomes used as predictors of recurrence?
