no more morphine

Julieanne, let your Mother know that she is not alone in stopping the morphine. My husband stopped the morphine and lived with pain as the constipation was worse. He then saw a pain Dr. who put him on the Fentanyl Patch as it is the least constipating. He still has to take Senna and a stool softener. She should not be living in pain.
Getting protein is important but it doesn't have to be meat. Milk and yogurt have protein, rice and beans together make a complete protein plus they provide fiber which also helps constipation. She also needs to not get dehydrated. Some of the food drinks like Boost and Ensure have a high protein version.
If she says she has no appetite or feels full or queasy all the time then medication for appetite might help. Julie

Is she not eating it because she thinks it is bad for her, or not eating it because she doesn't want it....it doesn't taste good or even sound good. That's different.

If it's because she thinks it's not good for her, you can try things like veggie casseroles, and squash soups, and cheese.

If its a taste thing, there are appetite stimulants.

Just a few thoughts.

I know that you are trying everything you can. Keep plugging!

Well, Mama has decided to discontinue the morphine (not replace it). She said it isn't worth the constipation. I guess if she feels ok without it, that's fine. I just don't want her to go too long without it. My other concern is the weight loss. She still refuses to eat sweets and meats. How do you tell someone that at this point, what she eats is not going to hurt her? I mean, it isn't keeping the cancer from spreading. It is just making her lose weight rapidly. I think I mentioned she lost 14 pounds in 3 weeks. Doesn't that sound excessive? She doesn't leave the house anymore, which is a red flag because she has been so active before. Thanks for listening.
