Recovering from minor surgery

Dana, please report the burning to your uro. It's not always normal after a TURB. I had no side effects at all. I think its a bit more difficult with men with the longer urethra...more of a chance of trauma. But there are drugs to give him relief and you want to make sure he does not have an infection. If he has a fever or a below normal temperature it could indicate infection so please report it.

Seriously, The problems with urination after surgery are frustrating and VERY common. They eventually work themselves back to normal, but it is a "pain" until they do.

But it is always good to know that on my first visit to the urologist, they very nicely said that all of my self conciousness would go out the window here. Everyone here can relate to the frustrations that come with this disease. We sympathize with your husband. Be sure to keep your (and your husbands)focus on the goal....to be cancer free.

I was 47 when first diagnosed.

The problems with urination are common after the surgery (especially since there were a lot tumors). Did the doctor give him anything for it? Pyridium (phenazopyridine) is one prescription that helps with urinary tract pain. It turns the pee bright orange.

He should call and let his doctor know just in case. They likely gave him antibiotics after the surgery as well because it is always possible to get an infection. If he doesn't have a fever, it is likely not infection but it is always a good idea to keep the doctor informed of any issues afterward.

I am sorry to hear that the you lost family members from Cancer, it is such a terrible disease.
May I ask when you were first diagnosed with cancer? My husband is 50 at the moment and I truly hope that he can beat this.

I am 72 year old Bladder, Prostate cancer survivor and still learning to cope with little things that come up. Yes, stinging is normal and is very uncomfortable as well as is the feeling you have to urinate a lot but it will pass. What he is going through is normal. Your questions and presence on blog is more than welcomed so do not get isolated --- my wife had a harder time with my cancer than I did but without her I definately would not be here. I saw the fear in her eyes and I wish she did not have to go through it but her presence was so needed as will yours. My husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer only 2 weeks ago (an ultra scan showed a large number of small abnormal growths in his bladder). Needless to say we are still in shock.
He had an operation to remove these growths (I think it is called TURBT surgery), the operation was last Monday and he still has a problem when urinating, he complains it stings and he has difficulty finishing, he also needs to go quite often.
Is this normal, to still feel discomfort after so many days?
This is probably just one of many many questions I will have in the future as we have only just started this journey (and I imagine will have it for the rest of our lives)
