O K Jack,
I guess you will be going through with pretty much what I had to deal with so I’ll be thinking of you on the 16th and the recovery days in May. I’m getting my “Cancer Survivor” 3rd year sign ready to go in the front yard.

I'm 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010

Thanks all for your supportive words. It helps knowing that you are not alone on this journey. Took the next couple of days off so that I can rest up for the surgery. Not looking forward to the next couple of months but the part about being able to say that I am cancer free and have been for so many years.... that does make it all worth it. Watching my grandchildren grow up... that too is a very good reason to go through this. I think I'll make my new goal living long enough to become a problem to my children!!! hehehe

Think I will skip the tummy tuck though. I think this operation will be quite enough for me to cope with at this time. Did make me smile though, Mike.

Jack,

You will be OK. It's going to be hard. But you have a team behind you. You are going to be in the hospital for the bowel prep. That wasn't the case for most of us. We just had the joy of doing that at home. I think if I was given the choice I would do it your way and get some anti-anxiety medication that night.

I was scared at the same time as excited. I was REALLY looking forward to getting that cancerous bladder the heck out of my body. I had also had significant prostate issues for years so I wasn't too worried about getting that out either. Tried to talk them into tummy tuck while they were at it but they wouldn't go for it.

Best of luck on the surgery. Remember to walk, walk, walk. You will not feel like and you will think we are crazy and that we must not know exactly how crappy and run over you feel when we suggested walking. We do know though. We lived it and we're here to tell you about it. You will be here to tell others about it down the road.
Even though you will feel crappy and run over you still need to get out of bed and put one foot in front of the other. Bring gum to chew after surgery also as that also helps get the intestines going and that is the absolute key to getting better and getting out of the hospital. Don't swallow the gum though.

The sooner that bladder is gone the sooner you can say you have been cancer free for one year, two years, etc.

We are ALL with you. We were soooooo Scared. Before surgery, The Ansthesiologist had to give me a "calming" potion to calm me down. They didn't have to use too much juice because I had been sleepless for about a week before and really needed a nap!

It appears as though you have EVERYTHING to live for and your support group is intact.

You ARE The MAN!!!!!!!!!!
Just think of how great it is going to be watching those Grandchildren grow up.

It is normal to have fear. But keep your attitude positive. The Prize is on the OTHER side of surgery. Your new life.

Best of Luck
George
