Hello sue and Pete.
I am just out of the hospital at MD Anderson in Houston as of two days ago. I have the neo-bladder and all is working well. Best advise I have is to make sure your doctor ahas done many of these surgeries in a year. Mine has done over 250 of them this year alone. His name is Dr. Kamat, but I hear dr. Denny the head of the dept. Is just as good. I am getting my strength back day by day. I picked the neo-bladder because I am fairly active at 62 and didn't want to deal with the bag. You can expect to be in the hospital any where from 12 days to 35 days. Just depends on how long it takes for you stomach and bowels to wake up. At this point it just an adjustment and from what am experiencing now a fairly easy one. It just takes a little time. The neo-bladder was right for me. Having a devoted love one by your side makes all the difference in the world.

Sue & Pete, have been busy, have not been on the site lately, but seen your post this morning. All I can give you is my experience from the last two years. I had the same problem deciding two years ago. Was able to talk to men who used my doctor and was happy with the neo. The first couple months was a bit of hell. Pain, dressings, etc. After that I just kept getting better. At nearly two years out there is nothing I can't do now that I did before. It scares me to think I could have made a different choice. I have been very lucky. The neo was right for me. Not everyone on here has had the same experience. There are no guarantees on any of these surgeries. Get the best Doctor you can! If I can help in any way just let me know.
Wishing you both the very best.
Duke

Sue, there are several ext bag folks here who can advise you & Pete in that area. It is popular with older diversion patiences because it is easier on the body than the underskin diversions.

I'm 70, retired heat/air contractor. After 4 months of keymo ileal conduit (IC) surgery removed bladder & prostate May 2010

Thanks you, George. My husband was recently diagnosed with T3 bladder cancer and is waiting for the radical cystecomy surgery. He is having a tough time deciding which of the 3 surgeries to have: ext bag, int bag, NE bladder. He is 55 years young. Any advice or support will be much appreciated. Thanks again, Sue (for Pete)
