Thanks for the post Mel.

I'm glad to hear your dad was a bit better today and its good that he still has his appetite, at least he'll be able to keep his strength up!! Just to let you know my dad had his "short" treatment yesterday and he is feeling ok today, much better than he was during the week (he was pretty sick at start of week!) so hopefully your dad will be the same. I'll be thinking of ye!!

My dad has just eaten 2 big bars of chocolate...he's defo feeling better :P

Hi Newbie,

Well it hasn't been an easy week. My father was VERY weak and tired and was basically in bed from Sat. until yesterday. He is up today but still not 100%. His appetite is very good so we are happy about that. He has a short day this coming Monday (I think it is only a half hour) so I am hoping that he won't be as wiped out.

I know this is all a lot to swallow but what I have realized from having second opinions is that they usually agree on treatment as long as it isn't radically different. I wouldn't worry too much about the change in chemo regime just yet. It is wicked stuff and is hard on the body, they probably just want to see how well it is handled the first round. They can always change it again after that.

Thinking of you here!!!

Melissa

Thanks for your comment GEO, glad to hear you are finished with your chemo and got through it so well! This is only my dads first set of treatments so we have a bit to go yet but he, like you, has been to work every day but does start a bit later than usual because he's really tired from the treatment! We knew that would be a side effect on the cisplatin week though, hopefully the gemzar alone will be alot better - I rang him this morning and he was already in work and all at 8am :) That's a good sign!! My dad's bloods were good yesterday so hopefully we'll get through it without too many delays!!

Hope you continue to do well!

My Onc origionally started me on the same regemine. I could never make the third treatment due to low blood counts. I always had to skip a week plus my off week. I was really lucky and had no side effects at all. I worked 10-12 hours a day and never missed a beat. It was absolutely normal for me just like not doing it at all. Your right the days did get long sitting there getting it. I really think the mental attitude has a lot to do with it. STAY POSITIVE

Sorry my post seemed to have disappeared so just reactivating it with what I previously wrote!!

Just to keep updated, Dad had Gemzar yesterday and he is feeling good enough today which is a relief because the previous 2/3 days were really miserable - that cisplatin is really mean and evil

Next week is his week off (with this new treatment regime), we discussed with our oncologist why they were using this new cycle and he said it was because alot of peoples blood counts go way down on the 3 week cycle this can cause delays and increased side effects!

We are looking forward to my dad having a break next week! Mel09 hope your dad is doing ok!

Re:Chemo Regime??? 1 Day, 21 Hours ago
Yes Leigh as you said, I remembered the doc saying -

Day 1 - Gem/Cis
Day 8 - Gem
Day 15 - Gem
One week rest

Then the email came from oncology here saying -
Day 1 - Gem/Cis
Day 8 - Gem
One week rest

But the doc from america has sent a mail saying that our MD is correct!?!? Why did he give us a different regime when we were in US and then suddenly change to agree with our oncologist...The reason we went to US for 2nd opinion was for "specialist" opinion/treatment plan!! Sorry for the rant but it just seems a bit strange to suggest one treatment and then change it!! Plus it looks like my dad will have 3 less gem rounds, will this change results?

Suppose I'm just overly nervous about any unexplained changes

Glad to hear you got through your chemo Leigh, it was probably good to have Day 1 & 2 instead of all on the one day because last week my dad was in hospital about 9 hours for Cis/Gem...long boring day and pretty draining!! How are you doing now?
Please note, although no boardcode and smiley buttons are shown, they are still useable
