Hi Pat,

Thanks for your concern!

My dad started his chemo last thursday, it was a long day but it went fine! He has been very good since, no real side affects to report, he felt a little tired but nothing too bad at all! His appetite is totally fine and he's doing really well! We are all really happy and hoping this continues :) Staying positive has at last payed off!!

I reallly appreciated Holly's advise and have my whole house eating smoothies and milkshakes now, though my dad hasnt lost his appetite so we'll all prob be piling on the pounds over the next few months ha! Just glad its all going well so far!

Thanks for the post, its great to know people are thinking of us xx

Thank you so much for your reply Holly, I appreciate your suggestions and help, went to pharmacy earlier and picked up a nice Disney kids toothbrush for my dad, I'm sure he'll think I'm crazy but should give him a laugh ;)

Thanks for offer of support, I'm sure I'll have questions as time goes by, its great to know that I can ask questions here and get honest replies from people that have been there...

All we can do now is keep fingers crossed and pray for an easy ride...

What foods did you find were easy to eat while on chemo? I'll whip up milkshakes for my dad defo, thanks for suggestion, I'm a whizz at smooties and milkshakes ;D Anything else you think of would be great help.

Hope you are well, you are in my thoughts and prayers!!

Hi Newbie8,

I did 4 months cisplatin and gemzar. I had both on day 1, gemzar only on day 8 & 15, then a week off for each round. Each dose of cisplatin is cummulative and will likely have worse effects each time. Needing procrit an nypogyn shots is common.

Personally, I preffered cold food as it had no smell. Things taste different on chemo so what had been a favorite before may not be during this time. I had alot of ensures and milkshakes. Just know strong food smells are like to upset the stomach.

I used to go back to the chemo room a few days after chemo just for more antipuke medication and fluids. My appatite was poor and I dehydrated so quickly so the fluids were unbelievably helpful. Ask them about doing that. All I had to do was call and they told me to come on down. They will also have sample anti nausea meds and advice on dealing with constipation or diareah that chemo can bring. Oh, get a kids soft tooth brush and baking soda - mouth sores and brushing can be mussed up - I used a kids softie and baking soda water during chemo.

The last 2 months I had hard so I'll spare you. Just know if it gets rough you can always find me on here :) I pray the chemo goes well and smooth for your Dad :)
God Bless, Holly
