Hi Chris,
I lost weight in the hospital and my Dr. told me that I would probably lose another 5 - 8 lbs. after I got home because we burn a lot of calories healing (I'm 5'3"). It's the only time in my life I've been on a weigt gain diet.He suggested that I make a milkshake and add a package of Carnation Instant Breakfast for nutrition. It tasted like a regular milkshake but had a whopping 850 calories. Since it was only for a short period of time he said don't worry about the cholesterol, just eat what tastes good. So I thought of all of the things I usually don't eat because they would make me gain weight, and really lived it up for a few weeks until I gained my weight back. Then it was back to a good diet.

Once he starts chemo, he will probably have to be on a healtier diet, but one 850 calorie a day milk shake with nutrition should help beef up the calories and be easy to get down even if it's divided into 2 or 3 servings. For me, regaining the energy just took time. I wish the best for both of you.
Kathy

Chriss,
Gene lost 30 pounds, I was scared to tell you the truth, he weighed 175 before surgery, he was skinny as a bone, but I bought him milk shakes, and fed him well, it takes time to put it back on, the metabolism has to catch up with whats happened, the body is fighting to continue and get over the hump. So if he is allowed milk shakes and protein, good meals, nothing gassy or greasy.. walking and rest, repeat repeat, it gets tiring and boring but until 5 weeks its what you do, small trips out help to see other things, take ones mind off it. its summer so lucky the walking can be outside on level ground...the weight will return,,, Ginger

Hi Chris,

As much as I am sure he doesn't want to hear it...it is recommended to start chemo 5-6 weeks after RC. I did chemo 5 weeks after RC at 42. It is not easy but I believe it is associated with better survival rates. Mine was cisplatin and gemzar for 4 months. I had RC 3/07, chemo 5/07-8/07, and didn't feel like a human being again until maybe 12/07.
As far as weightloss - I used to be 120...my lowest weight in treatment was maybe 110 and then I hit the 130 mark by Christmas :)
Sorry to hear of the positive node for your Dad. God bless, Holly

Chris I lost 25 lbs after my RC and a year later due to all the sweets I eat I am up to 230. My normal weight was about 210. So we have that WII and my wife went out and got the WII GET FIT program. It's really amazing measures you BMI-body mass index and all kinds of training for ex. yoga, aerobics, and strength training to name a few so I am now working out. Now I guess I have to take a time out from playing bowling, golf, and baseball LoL. Also I would want to start the chemo right away with that node being positve while it is currently one node now. Joe ;)

Hi-
Havent posted for awhile-been busy with my moms health problems.
My dad had his r/c on may 8th. he is doing well but complains about still having lack of energy and is concerned that he has lost 20 lbs. I think that this is normal but he is getting upset about it. I told him I would get on the forum and ask about the weight loss. Any input and/or suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Also unfortunately he had a positive node and will have to undergo chemotherapy soon. He wants to put it off until he regains some more energy. Would be interested in hearing how soon others started their chemotherapy and how many cycles.
thanks for any comments
Chris
