Well i think any IV is a general....but for a TUR you're only knocked out for about maybe a half hour ...at least with a good anesthesiologist and up and good to go about 20 min after you wake up if you can pee....amazing how fast the bladder can fill!!! And Rosie knows i hate epidurals...who needs to wait until their legs have feeling?....Obviously i had a bad anesthesiologist on that one...my clue should have been when i smelled Jack Daniels on his breath!! Besides i hate to watch and wait...i'm like a kid on a trip...are we there yet...is it over!!..........Pat

I think I am worried about everything! <g>

But I try to stay calm. There is always something new to worry about! Tomorrow I go in for pre-op tests: EKG, blood, urine, chest x-ray. One always assumes that will go well, but who knows?

An hour and a half. Hmm. Well, I will take the advice of the anesthesiologist and my doctor, I guess.

Thanks for your comments. Very helpful.

Just FYI, I was given a choice for anesthesia, either General or Epidural. I chose Epidural, but after the doc got a good peek in there, the anesthesiologist put me under General because it was going to take longer than expected. I think I was under about an hour and a half. But, I was told that it was long because I had a "whopper" and then the cauterizing machine broke down and they had to find another one. After that experience, I insisted on Epidurals for the Re-TUR and for the 2 following biopsies.

Let me just say, KaT, that I like the way that you are talking about your Doctor and I feel pretty good about you going into this. Having confidence in your Doctor is just so important, and then you can just kind of put yourself in his hands through this and trust him somewhat, listen to what he says to you and then, get on with your healing.

You are very lucky if you have a doctor that you like and trust.

Oh, I've heard that after BCG's that we start testing positive for TB too. I haven't been tested yet, so I can't really say.

I was taking Ibuproffen for arthritis, but started getting stomach ulcers. The Celebrex is working much better.

Are you worried about the anemia?

Hmm. Well, I am off them because of the kidney results. I live on ibuprofen, normally, with excursions into naproxen or Aleve. And I usually have quarterly facet-joint injections of cortisone. All that off for now, until the kidney values are explained. Sigh.
That is encouraging. My father had TB when I was a child (I grew up in Alaska, where TB was endemic in the 1950s). Although I never got it, I have always had a positive skin test, and cannot give blood, among other things.
Me, too. That is, I have never had it. But know that it makes recovery much longer than necessary. I had an epidural for a complete hysterectomy (the vertical-incision sort), with no problem. And I have had many procedures with IV anesthesia, whatever that is. I prefer that. (All I want is not to experience great pain and, perhaps, not to be too aware of the grisly stuff! ;))

Thanks, Pat. I was 66 last Sunday (at least it wasn’t April Fool’s day — off by a week! <g>).

I am under care for so many things that I try not to make anything responsible for the whole lot.

Everything interests me, so long as I am not in dire peril. I spent most of my life without a care in the world — spoiled, that is what I am. ;D

I do well enough with IV anesthesia, but have no problem with epidurals, either — I just thought that would be overkill for this. But I guess I will listen to the experts before trying to decide.

Hi Kat.....its about a 20min procedure and i personally would recommend the IV...thats pretty standard. I know you're in a good part of the country for uro's....i'm not but i didn't know that until after the fact and started researching and talking to the top surgeons who do this exclusively. I don't know your age but i know my father in advanced age became anemic and they found blood in the bowels tho no polyps. He had to have transfusions the rest of his life. I'm just being on the cautious side...do not want to alarm you at all...........Pat
