Sara Anne:

Thank you for your response. I am waiting for an appointment from UAB and hoping that they are a good place for me. This is a great forum and I am happy that I found it.

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. You are going about this in the right way, doing your research!!

I do not personally know anyone at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. However, a university environment is always a good idea. I did look over the urologists and their qualifications and interests there. As is common with many urology practices they seem "heavy" in docs with interest in prostate issues. I did find one who really does look good "on paper" for treatment of bladder cancer, Dr. Ferguson recently arrived there from MD Anderson and lists his primary interest as bladder cancer. The web site also says that he is "taking new patients." I think I would probably seek an appointment with him.

Bladder cancer surgery is complicated and, as a result, could be quite expensive. You are fortunate that UAB is in your network.

Please let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out

I am a 73 year old female in good health. I had a TUBRT on 4/29/19 and received the pathology report on 5/3/19. The diagnosis is invasive urothelial carcinoma, poorly differentiated. Positive for tumor invasion in muscularis propria.
I live in North Alabama and I am looking at either Vanderbilt (Nashville) or UAB (Birmingham) for treatment. I am told that I will probably need a Radical Cystectomy. I am waiting for appointments at both places. UAB is in-network for my insurance. Vanderbilt is not in-network which means I would have to pay 50% of all bills.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these facilities?
