JMW,

Doctors each seem to have their own set of tests. and order of tests they want.

An early CT is not unusual, as it looks beyond the bladder, to the full urinary system, including the kidneys and associated plumbing.

Since the doc is looking for a cause of blood in the urine, the CT request may be a good sign that the bladder is fine and the search for a cause has been extended.

Most times (by a huge factor) blood in the urine is NOT due to bladder cancer, but the possibility must be ruled out. Sometimes no particular cause is ever found for the blood.

It sounds like you have a careful doctor, checking all the possibilities.

Best,
Jack

JMW,

Welcome. Let's hope it is all nothing! The cystoscope and CT scan are all normal tests to rule out bladder cancer. The ultrasound might also be used but, it also was probably done to check a few other parts of your system. Red irritation could be many things. I do presume when you posted "a sample" was sent somewhere means a biopsy was done? I question as biopsies are usually done under anesthesia as a TURB. You do need to follow to be sure a pathology is done on the red spots to rule in or out what it is.

DX 5/6/2008 TAG3 papillary tumor .5 CM in size. 2 TURBS followed by 6 instillations of BCG weekly with a second round of 6 after a 6 week wait.

Welcome to the forum !

Please remember that we are not doctors and so any comments that I might make need to be taken with that in consideration The usual procedure if the urologist saw something during cystoscopy would be for her to schedule a TURB (transurethral resection of the bladder) or
biopsy to determine if the red area was malignant or not. You mentioned that you had cystoscopy And that they sent a sample for testing . Was this done under General anesthesia.?
If so then that was a TURB. If there was any indication at that point that cancer was present a CT scan would definitely be indicated. My only question to you is whether they did indeed take a biopsy sample .

I think that you will get the answer to these questions when you meet with urologist for your follow up

Wishing you the best of luck

Hello, I am having a series of tests done. Blood was found in my urine samples three times, so I was referred to a urologist. The urologist had me get an ultrasound, then a cystoscopy a couple of weeks ago. Although the cystoscopy showed a red area in my bladder, the doctor said everything looks fine. I guess they send a sample somewhere for further testing, so I have a follow up appointment with her at the end of the month. I thought that was all, so I was surprised to get a call from the secretary, telling me of my scheduled appointment for a CT scan, which must be done before my follow-up appointment.
So I wonder...is it normal for a CT scan to be ordered after a cystoscopy which the doctor said looks fine? Could it be that something was found on the test that needs further investigation, or do the doctors often just order a CT after a cystoscopy to cover all bases?

Thank you! :)
