Jim,

Welcome but, we all are sorry to add to our "club". The good news is you are doing what is pretty standard. CT Scan and cystoscope are pretty normal tests in your situation and as you said low grade is a good diagnosis if one has to have bladder cancer.

I had the same questions of my URO. He said there is little study of our cancer genetically speaking as we have the "forgotten cancer" even though it is #5 on the types list. I had an uncle fight it for years and pass away at age 88. I have read about too many people where family members have it so I presume there can be a genetic predisposition to bladder cancer. My doctors all wanted to know how much I smoked and I said zero. They were surprised and indicated there is a causal link via nicotine, maybe as much as a 2/3 causation. Many doctors that I have talked to say a theory is cancer may attack 5-7 times in our life and manifests itself if our immune system is down or we are in a period of stress. Makes sense to me.

Keep asking/posting as someone usually will see a thread with questions,

My dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer a little over 2 years ago (transitional cell), had TURBT done twice and eventually had total cystectomy with conduit/urostomy. He is doing well now.

Then this fall, I had a routine UA which showed microscopic hematuria. I saw a urologist, had a CT urogram performed which showed a 2mm kidney stone and "bladder wall thickening". He did a flexible cystoscopy in the office which showed a small tumor ( <1cm in size).

So 2 weeks ago I had a TURBT done with intravessicular Mitomycin afterward. Pathology came back this week, it was a pun lump or PUNLMP (papillary uorthelial neoplasm of low malignant potential). This is not that bad a diagnosis compared to what I was fearing, but it does make me wonder:

Is it likely that there is any relationship between my dad's bladder cancer and my bladder tumor? Or is more likely purely coincidental? (I am a never smoker with none of the other common risk factors present).

thanks,

Jim / Oklahoma City
