Ok, so went to urologist for another urine sample today, and I still have blood in my urine. He said that it has basically remained unchanged each time he has checked it. I asked if I should be concerned and he said no. He said we would still do the urine cytology in January and he would see me every 2-3 months to check the blood in my urine. I did ask if the January cytology still shows atypical cells if that would be cause for concern and he said no.
I talked to my husband about getting a 2nd opinion and he thinks it's totally unnecessary. I told him that most urologists don't deal with a lot of bladder cancer and he disagreed. Soooooo, now I don't know. He thinks I'm making a mountain out of a molehill - maybe I am....

Julia, While none of us are doctors I believe most of us would say get a 2nd opinion or get your URO to be more aggressive. This could easily be something minor as a UTI or stones passing or cancer. At this point I'd want either a CT scan or any test that reads the urinary tract (there are other tests but more invasive and probably not necessary). For me your doc is not diligent/aggressive enough, you want to find out why you still have hematuria!!!

Julia, I would assume that by now the urologist has had your urine sample cultured and he knows what "bug" he is dealing with? You might want to ask.

Thanks, Alan. I have not had a CT scan. I go for another urine test on Dec. 21. He has had me on 30 days of Trimethorprim 100 mg. tablets x twice a day. He said he wants to see me 2 weeks after antibiotics to check for blood in urine.
He wanted me to keep this appt. even though he has me scheduled for the urine sample for the urine cytology on Jan. 14.

I have been having some lower back pain off and on at times -- but nothing that I would consider taking anything for - and I probably only notice it more because of what's been going on for the past couple of months. I work a full-time office job and then come home and take care of my farm animals (cows, horses, chickens), so some lower back pain could be attributed to that. :) I'm constantly lifting 50-75 lbs. or being pulled or bumped by different things/animals. Other than basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers, I've always been very healthy.

However, I tend to be the worry-wart of the family.....

Julia,

I don't know if I missed it or not if you have had this done but, a CT scan is often used to read the whole urinary tract. If this hasn't been done, it should be as it is a standard workup. You really need to find out why-and there are a few people that pass blood with no known cause.

So, had the cystology on Friday, Oct. 30. He said that he took a couple of small biopsies but was sure they were nothing. Had a follow-up appt. for Mon., Nov. 9 and he did a urine sample and said I still had blood in my urine - had finished up 2-week antibiotic on Nov. 4. He put me on a 30-day antibiotic and said he wanted to see me 2 weeks after I finish it, so I'm scheduled to go back Dec. 21. In the meantime, he says that he wants to do a urine cytology.

So, I get home yesterday and there's a message from doctor on answering machine from Tuesday for me to call him on his cell phone. Hmmmmmm. I call and he said that there were some bad "marker" cells in my urine. (I think he used the term "marker or "marked", but honestly, little fireworks were shooting off inside my head and I'm not sure exactly what he said.) Said that he wants to wait 2 months and do another urine cytology. Said nurse will contact you to schedule. Literally, not 2 minutes later nurse calls to schedule. Jan. 14 to give urine sample and Jan. 21 to go over results.

Okay, so I thought I was pretty much done with this. Should I be worried? Is it okay to wait 2 months? Why an appt. to go over results when he just called with the other? Since cystology was okay, do I really have anything to worry about?
