Thank you so much sara.anne! He has checked out and signed up for the Affordable Care Act site and has found that to be very workable and has just gotten a response from a cancer charity that seems able to help...fingers crossed. Your message means a great deal to me and my family and I thank you for taking the time to share. I found on facebook a support group in the San Diego area (where he lives) and have invited him to join. Best wishes to you and your loved ones. Thank you again. - Vince

I am so sorry to hear about your father. He is very fortunate to have you and the rest of the family behind him.

Not sure exactly what to advise on the financial end. Be sure that, once you have the final diagnosis and treatment plan, that you talk to the social services department at the hospital where the surgery is likely to be done. Also, the Affordable Care Act goes into effect January 1 (we hope). Most states now have advisers available to help people determine how this might help them, and you and your father should look into this ASAP.

Hello all,

So my father has been recently diagnosed with invasive bladder cancer and has a doctor consultation on Oct 11 2013. He has also recently lost his job and can no longer keep up with his health insurance. His company didn't provide insurance and doesn't have COBRA. I am sure he will get some more information at the doctors, but we are worried that he will not be able to get treatment due to his financial situation. I am scouring the internet, but am hoping that perhaps I could be pointed in other directions. I am finding that he just doesn't qualify for some help, due to age, location, type of cancer, etc. We as a family are coping through open communication and remaining positive, but with insurance now gone we are scared. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you from my family. - Fango
