It is very important to get a second opinion. I was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of the bladder last year at 59. I live in Colorado, but my urologist strongly suggested I go to MD Anderson for a second opinion. They changed the diagnosis to sarcomatoid carcinoma, which is worse, and I went through several sessions of chemotherapy there, with follow-up sessions in Colorado Springs with my oncologist there. As of last August I fortunately got into a Phase I clinical trial at MD Anderson which has actually shrunk the primary tumor, but has not had much affect on the two secondary tumors in my right lung. My quallity of life is excellent; I just returned from two weeks in Tahiti. Based on the very rare nature of my revised diagnosis, I don't think I would be alive today if not for MD Anderson.

Alisa,

There is little I can say since I have no experience in this area but to tell you that my heart goes out to you, your spouse and your children. You all will be in my prayers. I'm so sorry you have to go through this awful situation. Hugs, Melodie

Alisa, did the Doctor mention giving your husband a blood transfusion to bring up his count? Transfusions are often used to boost the red blood cell production. Julie

Alisa, this is all great advice, I hope you can get in for that second opinion very soon. My husband was 35 when diagnosed and it was the thought of our 2 young children that made us fight as hard as possible for the best chance we could get. Best wishes,
Mona

Hi,

Yes - even while getting treatment you can get another opinion. When you call Mayo's they will want reports and films fed ex'd to them. They'll give you an address - you simply give it to your husbands dr and sign for them to do it. They will also want the actual slides from pathology - same procedure.

If I were in your shoes I would do this asap. Mayo is great.
