Just found a tumor...TURB next week...now what?

Awesome. Thanks for the reference material. Its what I thought - benign is pretty uncommon so pretty good shot I do have some form of bladder cancer. I can deal with that.

The TUIP doesnt bother me. But having a catheter does lol. Not sure what to expect with that except the obvious -- you simply just pee into a bag. Just having it however is going to be "interesting". Dont know how you sleep with one of those things. I am sure the doc/nurse will go over all the details and it will be a distant memory in a week....

And truly sometimes the most benign character in there can be a fooler...so you just hope he gets a good specimen into the muscle for the pathologist to determine what you're dealing with......

No, no FISH test that I am aware of. They did take urine and they said they tested it for microscoptic blood, but that came out negative. I have a VERY good urologist, Harvard trained, probably one of the best in my area so I have alot of confidence in him. Honestly, he just didnt seem that concerned about the tumor when he was telling me about it. He equated it to a small skin cancer somebody gets on their arm. But you never know, that may just be his bed side maner too...

My surgery is at 3:00pm and I was *told* I would be coming home that same day, but something is telling me now that I may end up doing a night in the hospital. Honestly, I would prefer to spend the first night in the hospital and give my poor wife a break - know what I mean? That may be easiest all the way around and something I may ask for.

PS. You had the TUIP too at the same time? Did it help with your urinary urgency issues and was it easy to recover from?

Sorry you have a tumor, but like you said, thank God it was found early.

I think 50/50 is 50/50 until you hear otherwise. Wait and see what the pathology shows. That will determine next steps. Could be the same either way. If benign, they probably still want to do 90 day cystoscopies to keep an eye on things. That may also be all they do even if it not benign.

With regard to TURB and TUIP at the same time, I had it and recovery was no big deal. I think it would be worse to do two separate surgeries.

The surgery is a piece of cake and depending on the time of day that they do it, it may even be outpatient. I had to stay over night because my surgery wasn't until very late in the day.

There is lots of information on this site and it's probably good to read from a just-in-case standpoint. However, its still only 50/50.

Did the uro do any urine cytologies or a FISH test? You may want to ask about those tests as well.

Long story short. 44M, never smoked, never worked around any chemicals. Had an urgency issue, saw the urologist who prescribed FloMax. It worked pretty well, but I just had this voice in my head (ie. God) screaming at me every day to still get the scope test so I went ahead and did it. The doc did find that I had a enlarged prostate that was getting in the way of my urethra, but when he went into my bladder he found a small tumor. He said it looked superficial and very small. He looked throughout my bladder and only found that 1 tumor. He said I was very lucky I had the test when I did (thanks God). No bleeding and no microscopic blood in my urine test. The doc says I have a 50/50 chance of the tumor being benign which puzzles me because when I do my research on the web, I find absolutely no info on benign tumors in the bladder. Everything points to cancer. How could that still be 50/50? Doc says I have a Stage 1 Ta tumor or an inverted paplinoma (sp?)

So, I go in for surgery next week and am having (2) procedures done - a TURB to get rid of the tumor and a TUIP to cut away the prostate. Might as well do both when he is in there and I am under general.

My questions are:

1. What is recovering from a TURB like and is it wise in your opinion to do both the TURB and TUIP (laser) at the same time -- too hard to recover from?

2. Am I most likely dealing with a cancer versus bengign even though the doc says it is 50/50?

3. What happens after the tumor is out in these small tumors? I know it depends on the type of tumor it is, if it has invaded the muscle wall and all that, but if it what he says it is - small tumor not invaded the wall...do I just get scopes every 90 days until we are sure it hasnt come back?

Needless to say, my wife is freaked out. I am doing pretty well, just realizing my life probably just changed and I am going to have to deal with it head on like I do everything else. I have a very strong faith and I am being bathed in prayer and I feel it...so I am not too shook up on it. Just have no idea what I am dealing with or what to expect from this TURB tumor removal. Any help you guys can provide would be great. I already took off 3 days from work afterwords and I know I will have a catheter (fun)...but is the recovery time even longer then that?
