Gordon,

Thanks for taking the time to look at my home State. I think you would like it here as we have access to both the mountains and the coast. (There is nothing like raking your toes through wet cold sand on a hot beach day!)

Sounds like you and your wife are living well and in good spirits. I do hope you will take those photos of the cabin so we can get a sense of that place also.

You know, one of the really neat things about the Montana photo is how the sun is laying like a patch in the floor of the valley. I wonder if this picture was taken in the morning?

Thanks a lot for your input here, Gordon....

My co-worker shared this photo of a seagull that she was able to capture while riding a ferry to Bath, NC...I wonder if he is trying to tell us something?

Rosemary and Alice,

Oh golly shucks, ::)

I googled Ocracoke Sound. Wow, Lady, You got place!!

I want to live by the ocean for awhile. My wife, Rose, and I are renting
a home in Cambria California for the months of February and March of 2008.
Mountains and Ocean!! We are really looking forward to it. We are thinking
winters in Cambria, California and summers in Priest Lake, Idaho. Of course one
concern is access to good medical facilities. Am I crazy, but I love the smell of the ocean? Rose is from San Franisco and she constantly reminds me of the smells. I tell her, it is almost as good as the smell of the pines! And the sounds! The breakers - the wind in the high pines. Wowzers!!

I just today purchased (on line) a new digital camera so I will take some pictures of the lake cabin to share with you. I plan to leave tomorrow for painting, upkeep projects, etc.

OK Alice. I lived in Denver while I completed my masters at the University of Denver. So I know the area and love it. And I really enjoyed the hummingbird picture---- But I don't think that's your place. I am from Eastern Montana so I know the beauty of the high plains. So tell us about your "place". Or, is this idea a "Western thing"!! :)

Rose is 5 years + out from breast cancer and I have been recently put on yearly "call backs" on my bladder experience. And, Rose had a good "scope job" on the lower part of her Bod today so we're in good spirits and looking forward to the lake/grandkids experience.

enjoy those moments.......................

a friend,

Gordon

Gordon.........................................................please excuse the pause, but I am so lost without words.

I am still trying to digest this immaculately, well written essay describing a "sense of place," and the lesson you have taught us from within.

For some reason, Gordon, I truly feel I can relate with you through your deep felt words and through your description of passion from your picture.

Remarkable, amazingly beautiful! I really am so touched...the picture, your words, your thoughts. Gordon, each one that you have expressed, truly holds a lifetime of pleasure, a lifetime of beauty, and a lifetime of peace.

Like you said, "Enjoy the moment." Well, Gordon, thank you for giving me that moment to enjoy and just know, I have loved every moment of it!

I will be meeting you in that "better place," so please, save me a glass of that red wine :)

Your Friend,

Alice

Wow, Gordon,

That is a truly awesome photo! The color palette is stunning. (BTW, that photo is almost
as old as I am, and it sure has held up well!)

Thanks for sharing your contemplations and reflections concerning sense of place, life, and being a cancer survivor. This serves to be a perfect adjunct to the special meaning of the photograph.

I think that having been born in such a beautiful place must have added a little extra shine to your rising star.

Thanks again and CHEERS!
Your buddy,
Rosemary

Hi,

As I was viewing Rosemary's and Alice's beautiful photos, I once again was reminded of how much of who we are is a function of where we are (or where we were as children). Pretty deep thoughts, huh? Western authors spend a great deal of time on "sense of place". As a native Montanan, I really identify with the thought process. I will always be a Montanan, even though I have lived and live in a different place.

The photo below was taken in 1957 (aren't digitual cameras great?). It is a photo of where I was born and raised; a guest ranch in Absarokee, Montana. Never did I doubt the beauty that surrounded me. It is taken from a hill upon which, as a young man, I often contemplated life and what its lessons had in store for me. Never did I in my wildest dreams think of the important lesson of being a cancer survior, a lesson far greater in importance than the defense of my doctoral dissertation or the passing of written comps or the importance of any profession designation that I might have. The condension in a moment (the statement, "you have cancer") of what is really important in life - family, friends, and place.

So Alice and others my thoughts are with you. Our lesson is to enjoy the "moment". What we see and feel is so important. My "place" is well established!! It is the "better place" that so many religions speak of. ;D I hope yours is as well.

My reflective moment is over. :) I'm heading for a glass of wine (red).

Thank you, Rosemary, for the compliments.

Rosemary, you have touched my heart on this one. Absolutely Fabulous! I have a nautical theme going on in my house and this picture would look superb on my wall :)

I bet it is such a precious scene seeing your grandbaby chasing the birds. Sounds so adorable.

I just can't stop looking at your picture. Wow! Truly a great scene.

"I LOVE THIS THREAD :) "

Alice
