Wow! That's a lot of colonoscopies! Your other risk factors made what your doctor said make more sense now. I now consider myself extremely lucky to only have had two!!!

It's different for everybody I suppose. My pain was never bad enough to need any meds but I don't have your other complicating factors.

My doc just gave me antibiotics and said increase the fiber and take fiber supplements when I had it. Clearly not as bad as when you had it.

However, when I had the intestinal blockages after my cystectomy--that was a whole different story. My sister had a blockage and said it was worse than labor pains.
So I guess I have a sense for how bad labor pains are now. :)
That took hospitalization for me a few times and lots of IV pain meds until I finally had them go in and repair the kinked section.

Anyway, hope you are all clear when you get your colonoscopy!

I have just recently started using a cell phone so still getting used to the idea of someone calling me on it instead of my home phone. My mom lived with me for years and would usually call me at work if I got a call from a doctors office but she passed away suddenly a couple months ago so I don't have that luxury anymore.

I have been having colonoscopies every 2-5 years since I was 17. I have suffered severely with ulcerative colitis so I am at higher risk for colon cancer and I have had 5 precancerous polyps removed over the years. I am very diligent about my follow ups so if anything ever does show up, we can catch it early. I hate them but I consider them just as important as a pap smear or mammogram.

As far as my stay in the hospital, diverticulitis is an infection so based on your white blood cell count and pain level they do occasionally have to treat you as an inpatient. My infection was pretty severe as was the pain level! Ouch! My family doctor also lost 2 very close friends to diverticulitis so she said she was not taking any chances.

They didn't have problems doing mine. But I believe they used a different segment of intestine for me that they did for you.

It does seem like you'd have other problems if it was that curvy/bendy/twisty. Makes no sense to me either.

Just wonder if anyone else had an experience after radical cystectomy that i did with a colonoscopy? My gastro could not get through the twists and turns...spent 40 mins. and gave up! Now really this wasn't some gastro who also runs a car repair shop or anything. My guess was that he went to far and because i do not have an ileal cecal valve he hit the ileum? I thought it was a good theory...but he said he could not have gotten that far. I asked my surgeon and he sort of agreed with me. Just talked to my new oncologist and mentioned it and he thought maybe abrasions or scar tissue but i would think that would be on the outside not inside??? Besides if i'm all bunched up and curvy wouldn't i be having a lot of other problems?
This one i can't figure out!!!

What I did was tell my doctor that it was OK to leave a message on my voice mail with the results, be they good or bad. Since I have them call my cell phone, I'm the only one getting the message. That way they don't have to worry about privacy issues.

As to the gastro, it can hide there but it most often isn't there. Your doctors need to start thinking about what they say to you!

Sure, do the colonoscopy but it's just like any other colonoscopy.

My philosophy is I don't have it (no matter what "IT" is) until somebody finds it! But that doesn't mean I avoid the doctors or that I don't follow the regular checks according to my age for all of the various things one gets prone to the longer we keep breathing.

I have diverticulosis and periodic diverticulitis. It's a literal pain in the rear (Sorry--couldn't help myself) but it doesn't mean you have anything else. I got my colonoscopy and they found various things but nothing to worry about and just needed to schedule another for a few years down the road (I think 4 or 5).

About 10 percent of Americans older than 40 have diverticulosis. The condition becomes more common as people age. About half of all people older than 60 have diverticulosis. Reference: digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/diverticulosis/

I'm surprised you had to be hospitalized that long for it. More fiber!!!

Thank you everyone for your responses! I talked to the medical assistant today and she said "I was just calling to let you know that your cytology results came back and they were negative!" I was thrilled to hear this but I asked why she said ASAP. She said most people want to know the results right away so that is why they say that. I told her I have NEVER had anyone even call me on these results before. She indicated that they just started doing these tests this year...unless a patient requested it, it was never done.

I am just glad it was a negative result and not something more serious. Now I can move on to worrying about my colonoscopy next month! My gastro said that with diverticulitis, cancer can be hiding in the outpouches (diverticulia)and it won't show up on CT scan so they always do a colonoscopy after the colon heals. Yeah me! NOT!

Thanks again everyone.
