Bladder Cancer Signs & Symptoms

Please be aware that the following symptoms can be signs of other conditions and do not mean that you have bladder cancer.

If you have any of the following symptoms discuss them with your health care provider.

The bladder cancer symptoms may include:

  • Blood in the urine (Hematuria). Hematuria may be visible (gross) or visible only under a microscope (microscopic) and is usually painless. The urine may have a slightly pink or orange hue, or it may be bright red with or without clots. Many other conditions may cause blood in the urine, but bladder cancer should be ruled out.
  • Pain during urination (Dysuria)
  • Frequent Urinary Tract Infections
  • Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection with no bacteria present
  • Painful Urination
  • Frequent Urination
  • Having to Urinate, but without results
  • Pain in the lower back around the kidneys (flank pain).

Less common bladder cancer symptoms may include:

  • Swelling of the legs
  • Weight loss
  • Bone pain
  • Anemia
  • Pain of the rectal, anal or pelvic area

Bladder cancer may be present without any symptoms. You may wish to discuss your risk factors with your health care provider.

Bladder cancer survivors report that they may have had all, some or none of the above bladder cancer symptoms. Remember that while these are bladder cancer symptoms they can be signs of other conditions.
